The date in the caption is certainly incorrect: the Scots Guards arrived in Shanghai on 2 July 1928 and were based there until 20 January 1929 as part the British Shanghai Defence Force'. On both days, and on a number of occasions in between, they paraded along the Nanjing Road (where they are shown in this photograph).

The soldiers (Scottish Company, Shanghai Volunteer Corps) are guarding the war memorial and the wreaths laid for the First World War dead from Scottish regiments. This photograph was probably taken after the St Andrew's Day Observance remembrance event at the War Memorial (see AL-s31) and at the Union Church on 29th November 1925. Chinese bombers were apparently trying to bomb the Japanese cruiser Izumo (Idzumo), when two bombs fell between the Cathay and Palace Hotels in Nanking Road. Approximately 400 people were killed or wounded. Known as “Bloody Saturday”. Side entrances to the Cathay Hotel are on the right. See AL-s59.
