On the stage, seated at the front, second from the left, is the Duke of Connaught (1850-1942). The Duke of Connaught visited Shanghai, in April 1890. This photograph was published with the title: 'The Presentation of the Masonic Address'.

The Bund had been decorated to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to Shanghai in April 1890. Flags put out include the Scottish Saltire, Red Ensign (British), and the English Cross of St George, as well as national flags for France and USA. Ceremonial archway.

The Bund had been decorated to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to Shanghai in April 1890. The banner reads: "THE FOREIGNER IN [..] CATHAY BIDS YOU WELCOME." Outside the Shanghai Club, there is a horse-drawn delivery van for Hall and Holtz, drapers, tailors and hosiers. Also a feather duster hawker.

The larger building is the premises of Messrs Russell and Company, No. 6 The Bund, Shanghai. The Bund had been decorated to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to Shanghai in April 1890. The banner reads: "HE MOUNTS FROM HIGH TO HIGHER HONOURS STILL".

The statue is on the Bund, facing up Nanking Road (Nanjing Lu), which is in the foreground. It was unveiled during the Duke and Duchess of Connaught’s visit to Shanghai in April 1890. Sir Harry Parkes (1828-1885), British diplomat.

This building is most likely the remains of fort dating from the Taiping rebellion (1850-1864). Probably near Shanghai. From an album inscribed to H. Wilcockson from C. E. Darwent. The Revd. C.E. Darwent, Minister of the Union Church (visible in the middle of this photograph), was also a photographer and author of a photographer-friendly guidebook to Shanghai: https://archive.org/details/cu31924023217825 "Shanghai: a handbook for travellers and residents to the chief objects of interest in and around the foreign settlement and native city" (1904). This paddle steamer is named after the city of Ichang (now called Yichang). On the far left is the old French Consulate; and next to it, the Messageries Maritimes. On the right is the Gutzlaff Signal Pole. In the background can be seen the steeple of St Joseph's Catholic Church.
